Posted | iPhone X, Samsung

The competition between Samsung and Apple has probably existed longer than there is a Smartphone. In autumn 2017, Apple introduced the new iPhone X, designed to revolutionize the Smartphone market. 2018 Samsung will follow with the Galaxy Note 9, which will be released this August. The biggest differences that could be important for a purchase decision can be found here. Who will win the comparison duel Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone X?

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone X: Look

Differences can be seen at first glance. While Apple uses a soft, rounded design for the iPhone X, the note 9 appears almost angular, as is already known from Samsung. Both devices have a glass backside, making protective covers seem almost indispensable. The iPhone stands out because of the vertically arranged camera, while Samsung has installed it horizontally and in a less space-saving way. Directly below is a fingerprint sensor that the user looks for in vain on the iPhone. Incidentally, the note stands out particularly for its size. It is about 18 mm higher than the iPhone, but also almost 30 grams heavier.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone X: Connections

The built-in connections in the iPhone X are as minimalist as the design. It comes with just one Lightning connection and still does without a jack plug. Samsung remains traditional in this respect and saves users the need to reach for the adapter. Very advanced, however, is the USB-C port built into note 9. In addition, the note-typical S-Pen is integrated back into the Phablet, making everyday things, such as writing short notes, more intuitive and easier.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone X: Screen

The trend towards a larger display continues. That’s why the 5.8-inch screen of the iPhone X is almost as small as the note 9: the diagonal of the new Samsung flagship measures a whopping 6.4 inches. This huge display is a sAMOLED panel with QHD+ resolution and 2960×1440 pixels. Towards the pages it is rounded and is currently considered one of the best displays on the market. The iPhone X advertises with Super-Retina, an OLED panel and 2436×1125 pixels. The characteristic Notch is also sticking out here.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone X: Cameras

The cameras built into smartphones are increasingly becoming a criterion for or against a purchase for users. The manufacturers also know why both devices take good photos by default. Both come with a 12 MP dual camera and can thus create the popular Bokeh effect (portrait), for example. With a grade of 9, Samsung focused particularly on night shots with less image noise. The telephoto lens has an f/2.4 aperture and a variable f/1.5 aperture at a wide angle so that more light can be captured in combination. iPhone X also has an f/2.4 aperture, but only an f/1.8 aperture at a wide angle, which should be large enough for most people. Selfies can be shot at 8 MP for Samsung and 7.1 MP for Apple.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone X: Technical Details

Memory: The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 comes with 6 or 8 (!) GB RAM and 128 or 512 GB internal memory. This can be extended by up to 512 GB, practically over 1 TB is possible – wow! The iPhone X has 3 GB RAM and 64 or 256 GB memory capacity, which is typically not expandable by Apple.

Battery: Both models can be charged without contact. Quick Charge is also possible, although Apple unfortunately does not supply the necessary accessories ex works. While the iPhone has a 2716 mAh battery, Samsung kills you with a 4000 mAh battery.

Unlocking: Apple’s minimalism is also evident in security. iPhone can only be secured with a PIN/password or FaceID. Samsung offers a variety of options, including PIN/password, fingerprint, iris scanner and face recognition. In contrast to FaceID, note 9 does not work with a 3D scan, but only with a 2D scan of the face. This limits the security, since theoretically one photo of the person is enough to unlock it.

Software: Samsung uses Android 8.1 Oreo with Experience 9.5, with the Bixby button (personal assistant) and the shortcut bar at the edge of the screen as unique selling points. Apple’s own operating system iOS 11 is integrated into the iPhone, which will be updated to iOS 12 in autumn 2018. iOS is highly secure and shines in the new device with intuitive wipe gestures, as no more home buttons are installed.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone X: Price

Both devices are not bargaining and a purchase should therefore be well thought out. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 starts with the basic equipment with 128 GB at 999€, for the quadruple memory 1249€ are due. With iPhone X, the 64 GB version already costs 1149€ and ends at 1319€ for 256 GB. On Amazon the iPhone X costs about 980€, which is still a lot of money after almost a year on the market.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone X: Conclusion

Both the new Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Apple iPhone X are great devices with some advantages and disadvantages. The note shines particularly with a large and expandable memory, as well as a multitude of unlocking possibilities. It is also the clear winner in terms of productivity thanks to the S Pen. However, the grade 9 hardly offers any new features to the Samsung Galaxy S9+, which is a bit sad. iPhone X features a perfectly customized iOS infrastructure that makes operation intuitive. It is also slightly smaller and lighter, which makes it appear more manageable for the user. However, the iPhone is also a lot more expensive than the Note model, if you take the prices directly from Apple, and more susceptible to damage.

In conclusion, it is not so easy to declare one of the devices better or worse. Depending on the field of application and personal preferences, both Smartphones have strengths and weaknesses and are worth their money in many respects. But if you are only looking for a mobile phone for chatting and making phone calls, you are probably a bit wrong in this price segment. In our comparison Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs iPhone X, however, the Apple smartphone is way out in front of the other device due to its better performance.
